All Session long TEA Partiers, Constitutionalists, Libertarians, and the ACLU have been opposed to SB 245, which would overhaul our states driver’s license system in order to make it compliant with the Federal Government’s REAL ID program. REAL ID is a Federal Identification program that will violate citizen’s Civil Liberties and State’s Sovereignty (for more info CLICK HERE.) SB 245 traveled through the Legislature like a roller coaster ride with highs and lows, and on the very last day of the session it passed. Governor Bevin had expressed his support for this legislation and appeared to be unwavering on that support throughout. However, after the session ended two events happened, Congressman Thomas Massie (KY-4) sponsored HR 4375, Federal legislation to repeal REAL ID, and then this past Saturday at the Kentucky Republican State Convention a resolution was overwhelmingly passed opposing REAL ID. We believe these two events were critical in giving the Governor pause, allowing him to re-evaluate his stance, and hopefully veto it.

Today was the last day by law the Governor could veto SB 245. He could have also signed it into law, or just allowed it to become law without his signature. However, he choose to listen to Kentuckians and veto it. We applaud him for being the kind of Governor that listens to the citizens of the Commonwealth, something that has been severely lacking in the Governor’s office for quite some time. We are thankful that he understands this is an important issue that needs to be discussed further before action is taken. Governor Bevin has given liberty lovers everywhere the opportunity to educate people on the complexities of REAL ID.

With this veto, we have very definitive proof that citizen involvement in the legislative process works, even all the way up to the Governor’s Office. Having said that, it helps to have and executive that is willing to listen. Governor Bevin has encouraged us with his veto today, the lesson learned is average everyday people making their voice heard can make a difference. This is what good governance should be about.

We would like to thank all of the citizens of Kentucky who made calls, emails, lobbying, and any other efforts they made against SB 245 this year. We would like to thank the members of the legislature that voted against it. We would like to thank Mark Lerner from the Constitutional Alliance for his invaluable knowledge we relied upon to combat SB 245. We would like to thank all the pastors that worked against SB 245 behind the scenes. We would like to thank Rep. Thomas Massie for sponsoring federal repeal legislation, and the influence his voice yields. We would like to thank Governor Bevin for listening to the concerns of the citizens he represents. Most importantly we thank God, because there were times we were truly at a loss as to what to do, or if anything could be done, and at the last moment, (God’s Timing/Testing) we believe he touched Governor Bevin’s mind and heart on this issue and showed him a better route to take.

Congratulations on a job well done during a very tough session. However, the fight is not over, this is not the last we will hear of this issue. We need to educate more people here in Kentucky, and repeal it at the Federal Level. But for now everyone has earned moment to step back and enjoy this victory.
